A flue gas monitor is an instrument used to measure emissions of certain gases from combustion processes. These measurements are used for statutory compliance with pollution limits and to help optimize industrial production processes. The most common measurements are oxygen (O2), carbon monoxide (CO) and nitrous oxides (NOx).
The measurements taken by a flue gas analyser typically include draught measurement (the differential pressure between the combustion air nozzle and the last heat exchanger in the exhaust system), combustion efficiency calculation, temperature measurement, and CO2 calculation. These values can be displayed on a screen as part of the analysis or stored for later download to a computer or printed out as reports.

There are many different types of flue gas analyzers available to meet a specific need. For example, portable instruments like the AMETEK Land Lancom 4 allow you to take a reading of CO (carbon monoxide) directly from the flue pipe or the combustion air supply and display it on the monitor as COAF. This value reflects the actual undiluted carbon monoxide level in the combustion process. It is compensated for diluted excess air so it is comparable with the as-measured oxygen concentration in the sampled gas.
In addition to this, flue gas meters must be capable of measuring the flow rate of the gas and be able to withstand high temperatures. To address these challenges, the instruments use a probe that is cooled with a Peltier cooler and passed through a filter assembly to ensure the sample gas arrives in a clean and dry condition to the sensors for measurement.
